Entrelacs brings together the distinct yet harmonious works of contemporary artists Laura Payne (Alberta, Canada), Kelly Uyeda (Toronto, Canada), and Aralia Maxwell (Montreal, Canada). The term “Entrelacs,” meaning interlacing or intertwining, serves as both a conceptual and visual foundation for this exhibition, highlighting the intricate connections between diverse artistic practices and cultural narratives as well as the process-driven and self-reflective nature of the artworks presented.
Exhibited artist: Yasuaki Kuroda
Robertson Arès is delighted to present the exhibition Colour Field On Field by Yasuaki Kuroda, opening on September 5th. This exhibition will showcase recent works by the Japanese artist, renowned for his impeccable and innovative mastery of traditional weaving techniques and natural dyeing. Kuroda’s practice is distinguished by his ability to integrate ancestral elements into a resolutely contemporary aesthetic. His meticulously woven works, crafted with naturally dyed silk threads, are characterized by a pixelated visual effect that invites a deep reflection on the evolution of creative techniques, the value of transmitted knowledge, and the connection between textiles and language.
Kuroda views textiles not merely as a material but as a medium of communication predating words. Each thread he weaves carries a story, a moment, and it is within this meticulous process that the artist finds his expression. His work transcends simple patterns to become a genuine exploration of the dialogue between the artist and the material, where each piece becomes a reflection of the interaction between the artist’s choices and the very essence of the materials used.
