Databases of cultural production are simultaneously the result of organizational logic, priorities, and biases, and a further reification of such value systems in the world. In the current context of institutional critique, is there more we can learn from cultural datasets and the means in which they are organized? What occurs to the status of the Individual Masterwork when a dataset is approached with a global, statistical sensibility? What emergent patterns become apparent through connections between works, or through the negative space separating one work from the next?

Mi’gmafrica is the mystical encounter between two cultures connected to Mother Earth and the spirit of the Ancestors: the melodies, songs, tributes to the elders and prayers come together in power to bring you to the confines of the history of mankind. Two traditions, two continents, which draw their inspiration and strength from the same source, the roots of the earth. Sadio and Ivy will offer you an intimate duet show, as part of the closing of the 6th Contemporary Native Art Biennial.
Sadio Sissokho, emeritus griot from Senegal, shares the traditional Mandingo songs of West Africa with kora and voice. Valérie Ivy Hamelin, Mi’gmaw artist from the Gespeg nation in Gaspésie, accompanies her with her hand drum, her flute and her voice, adding traditional Mi’gmaq songs and her personal inspirations through the melody of the kora.
